Abdominal Ultrasound
What is it?
An abdominal ultrasound is a medical imaging test that uses sound waves to see inside the abdomen. This is carried by placing a probe (with jelly) onto patient abdomen.
Why it is needed?
An abdominal ultrasound is a non-invasive way used to assess the organs and structures within the abdomen. This includes the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, bile ducts, spleen, kidneys, uterus and ovaries. Ultrasound technology allows quick visualization of the abdominal organs and structures from outside the body. This is usually indicated in patient who experiences unexplained abdominal pain. It can also be used to assess bowel inflammation and faecal loading in an experienced hand of radiologist.
What preparation do I need?
Preparation for an abdominal ultrasound requires you to refrain from eating or drinking anything except a small amount of water for 6 hours before the exam. This step helps reduce the amount of gas in your abdomen, thus enhancing the clarity of ultrasound images.
How long is it?
It can take 20-30 minutes to survey the abdomen
Is there any risk?
It is very safe and non-invasive. There is no radiation.
