Abdominal X-ray

It is an x-ray showing the organs in the abdominal cavity such as stomach, liver, spleen, small bowel and large bowel.

Why it is needed?

It helps to check if there is bowel dilatation by looking at the characteristic of air distribution and the width of the bowel. It is also an useful tool to check for faecal loading, bowel perforation and kidney stones.

What preparation do I need?

There is no preparation needed prior to the test. It is important to rule out pregnancy in child bearing age teenage girl.

How long does it take?

The procedure is quick and easy, often takes no longer than 10 minutes.

Is there any risk?

Patient will expose to a small dose of radiation equivalent to a 3 month-worth of background radiation.
