24 Hour PH Study
What is it?
This procedure measures how often the acid in the stomach reflux back up to the oesophagus over 24 hour period. This will inform doctor whether your child’s symptoms are caused by acid reflux.
Why it is needed?
It is indicated in patients who have suspected gastro-oesphageal reflux such as young infants who has unexplained colic or apnoea. It is also useful in patients who experience heart burn, epigastric pain. It tells clinician how severe is the reflux and whether the symptoms are assocoiated with acid reflux.
What preparation is needed?
There is no particular preparation is needed except some chosen PH studies require anti-secretory medication to be stopped between 2-5 days and some PH studies require patients on the anti-secretory treatment.
How long is the test?
It lasts 24 hour. After PH probe is secured, patient can take the PH machine home and return it 24 hours later.
Is there any risk?
There is a possibility that the PH probe may be wrongly placed into the wind pipe instead of oesophagus. Patients may therefore experience aspiration and coughing. A chest x-ray may be needed to check the PH position.
